2.2 MILES – MAPLETON, OR
Sweet Creek has always been a gem of a waterfall hike, with multiple falls alongside the river as you walk the trail. During the winter months, it’s difficult to find trailheads that lead to spectacular views, or that perfect reward after a climb. Sweet Creek provides enjoyment year round, even when it’s dumping rain.
A fond memory I have on this trail is when we took the kids over to the coast for a spontaneous overnight trip, and I really wanted to take the kids on this hike on our way home. It was raining so hard, but Mark and the kids decided it would be fun to go along with my plan. We were running down the trail, from giant tree to giant tree trying to seek cover form the massive raindrops. It was laughable, beautiful in Oregon’s classic ways, and memorable. I think about it every time I walk this trail. It’s a special thing to be connected in nature, but also with memories that will last a lifetime.
We hiked this trail in February, after a few months of rain, and I will say it was probably the most beautiful I’ve seen the falls, and even saw some I’d never seen before because there was so much water in the river. It was quite a sight to see. It is proof that the trail can never bore me, and that I’ll find new things to appreciate every time I go out exploring.

To get there from Eugene, take Beltline to West 11th, and turn right and start traveling on HWY 126 West for about 40 miles. Turn right on Sweet Creek Road and travel for 10 miles. There will be signs on the road leading you to the trailhead. On your right there will be a parking lot with a restroom.
Enjoy your hiking adventures! Thanks for following along with me.
